What Are Cosmetic Braces?

Cosmetic braces, also known as aesthetic orthodontics, is a method that uses tooth adjustment techniques to move overbites, underbites, and misaligned teeth into the correct standard bite. This process applies specialized dental appliances such as brackets, archwires, elastic bands, miniscrews, or clear aligners to improve the aesthetics of the smile and chewing function.

When Should I Get Braces For Adults?

Braces are an orthodontic technique that corrects misaligned teeth and jawbones using dental appliances like brackets, archwires, or clear aligners. These appliances create pulling forces that help move teeth to their ideal positions, resulting in a balanced bite and straight teeth.

Contrary to the common belief that only children can get braces, braces for adults are increasingly popular and yield significant results. However, orthodontic treatment should be done as early as possible to help teeth move faster and optimize outcomes. Timely intervention helps correct the bite, improve aesthetics, and create a harmonious facial appearance.

If you are concerned about the discomfort of wearing brackets, you can opt for cosmetic braces with clear aligners. This method ensures orthodontic effectiveness while offering convenience, suitable for those who want to maintain a natural appearance throughout the treatment process.

Cases That Should Get Braces Early

Braces (orthodontics) are an effective solution for improving facial aesthetics, optimizing chewing function, and protecting oral health. Below are cases that should be treated early for the best results:

Underbite teeth, buck teeth, buck teeth, plowshare face: These conditions not only unbalance the face but also affect the ability to chew and can cause lisping.

Sparse teeth, gaps between teeth: Large gaps between teeth make it easy for food to get stuck, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gingivitis, and making teeth more likely to loosen over time.

Răng mọc lộn xộn, răng chen chúc, răng khấp khểnh: Không chỉ gây mất thẩm mỹ, tình trạng này còn khiến việc chăm sóc răng miệng trở nên khó khăn, dễ dẫn đến các vấn đề nha khoa.

Sai lệch khớp cắn và xương hàm: Các dạng như khớp cắn hở, khớp cắn sâu, khớp cắn ngược, khớp cắn chéo có thể làm khuôn mặt mất cân đối, gây ảnh hưởng đến khớp thái dương, khớp nhai.

Advantages After Getting Braces

Today, braces not only improve aesthetics but also offer many important benefits for oral health and chewing function. Here are the outstanding benefits this orthodontic method provides:

Precise Bite Adjustment

Braces help correct misaligned teeth, moving them to their ideal positions while ensuring balance between the upper and lower jaws. When the bite is physiologically correct, chewing forces are distributed evenly, reducing the risk of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Improved Chewing Function

Braces help correct misaligned teeth, moving them to their ideal positions while ensuring balance between the upper and lower jaws. When the bite is physiologically correct, chewing forces are distributed evenly, reducing the risk of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Enhanced Oral Hygiene

Straight teeth make oral hygiene easier, minimizing food trapping – a cause of cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis. A well-aligned set of teeth reduces the risk of serious oral diseases.

Achieve a Beautiful Smile

After orthodontic treatment, the teeth will become well-aligned, with no more overbites, underbites, or misalignments. As a result, you will have a natural, radiant smile and feel confident in communication.

Prevention of Other Complications

Getting braces early helps prevent prolonged misalignment, reduces the risk of abnormal tooth wear, protects tooth enamel, and minimizes serious complications like premature tooth loss.

Improved Facial Appearance

By using specialized orthodontic appliances, braces help adjust the jaw structure, creating facial harmony. The face becomes more balanced, refined, and attractive.

Are Braces Effective After 25-30?

Many people wonder if getting braces after the age of 25-30 can yield good results. In reality, orthodontics has no age limit; what’s important is adhering to the treatment plan and instructions from the orthodontist. Whether you are over 25 or 30, you can still get braces to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile. The key is to maintain proper oral hygiene during treatment for the best results. If you have an overbite, underbite, or other oral health issues, consult reputable dental clinics about orthodontic treatment options right away!

The Braces Process

What Are the Stages, How Long Does It Take

At My Auris, the braces process is closely monitored by a team of experienced orthodontists, ensuring that tooth movement proceeds according to plan and avoiding any deviations that could affect the final outcome. The braces process at My Auris consists of 4 important stages:

STEP 1

Consultation and X-rays

First, the orthodontist will conduct a general examination to assess the tooth misalignment and learn about your dental history (if any). You will have intraoral and extraoral photos taken, as well as X-rays, cephalometric X-rays, etc. This data helps the doctor accurately determine the condition of your teeth and create a treatment plan.

STEP 2

Consultation and Treatment Planning

Based on the X-ray results and orthodontic software, the doctor will determine the detailed extent of misalignment, propose a treatment plan, and estimate the duration of the braces. After your approval, the process of taking dental impressions will begin.
For traditional braces: Impressions are taken using the conventional method.
For Invisalign clear aligners: Modern 3D scanning technology is used to increase accuracy.

STEP 3

Treatment with Orthodontic Appliances

After the treatment plan is finalized, the orthodontic appliances will be fabricated. The process varies depending on the type of braces:

Brackets: The doctor attaches the appliances directly in the mouth.
Invisalign Clear Aligners: After the teeth are scanned, the treatment plan is created on ClinCheck within 3 weeks. It then takes another 3-4 weeks to manufacture the set of aligners and ship them to the clinic.

STEP 4

Wearing a Retainer

After completing the orthodontic process, your teeth will be well-aligned, your bite will be correct, and your face will be harmonious. To ensure stable results, you need to wear a retainer for 1-2 years to prevent the periodontal ligaments from shifting.

Types of Cosmetic Braces

When visiting a dental clinic, clients will be examined by an orthodontist, have X-rays taken, and be advised on the appropriate type of braces. Choosing the right orthodontic technique helps optimize treatment effectiveness, saving time and money.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are an orthodontic method that uses a system of brackets and archwires made from stainless alloys like Nickel-Titanium to adjust teeth to the desired position.

COMMON TYPES OF METAL BRACES

There are currently two common types:

Traditional Metal Braces: Require elastic bands to secure the archwire.

Self-Ligating Metal Braces: Have an automatic latch that holds the archwire more securely.

Treatment time is approximately 12–36 months, depending on the severity of the misalignment.

ADVANTAGES

Low cost, suitable for many people.
Fast results due to stable pulling force.

DISADVANTAGES

Less aesthetic as the brackets are clearly visible on the teeth.

Ceramic Braces

This braces technique uses a system of ceramic brackets that have a color similar to natural teeth, enhancing aesthetics.

Treatment time: about 6 months longer than metal braces.

ADVANTAGES

High aesthetic appeal, making it difficult for others to notice you are wearing braces.

DISADVANTAGES

Less durable than metal braces, prone to breaking.
Higher cost.

Lingual Braces

Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are attached to the inner surface of the teeth, completely hiding the brackets.

Treatment time: 18–36 months, depending on the bite condition.

ADVANTAGES

Maximum aesthetics as the brackets are not visible.

DISADVANTAGES

Much higher cost compared to other methods.
Oral hygiene is more difficult as food can easily get trapped in the brackets.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a bracket-free braces method that uses clear aligners to straighten teeth.

Treatment time: 18–36 months, with 25–40 aligners depending on the case.

ADVANTAGES

High aesthetic appeal, hard for others to notice.
Does not cause sores on cheeks or gums.
Can be removed for eating and oral hygiene.

DISADVANTAGES

Much higher cost compared to other methods.
If not worn for the prescribed amount of time, treatment results may be affected.

Important Notes

For Successful Braces Treatment

To ensure the braces process goes smoothly and achieves the desired results, you should note the following:

Choosing a reputable orthodontic clinic is the first crucial factor. You should seek out orthodontists with high expertise and extensive experience to get a detailed and suitable treatment plan for your condition.
Actively choose the type of brackets or aligners that fit your needs and financial situation. If needed, don’t hesitate to ask your orthodontist for advice to make the right decision.
Additionally, to monitor the progress, you should understand the criteria for removing braces, such as bite, midline, tooth position, tooth function, aesthetics, and durability.

Throughout the bracing process, you should avoid eating foods that are too hard or chewy, as they can affect the pulling force and treatment progress. After the braces are removed, you should also avoid chewy and hard foods initially to help stabilize the new tooth positions.
Maintain brushing your teeth at least twice a day, combined with flossing and using mouthwash to remove plaque and food debris. Give up bad habits like biting pens, thumb sucking, lip sucking, or tongue thrusting, as they can affect tooth movement and the bracing process.
Ensure you wear your retainer for the required duration and attend regular check-ups with your orthodontist to monitor tooth movement and detect any abnormal oral diseases early (if any).
After removing the braces, you can opt for other dental services to perfect your smile, such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, fillings, or implants, based on your doctor’s advice.

Do braces hurt?

When wearing braces, the force applied to move teeth into their correct position on the arch can cause soreness, discomfort, and difficulty eating in the first few weeks. However, this feeling will gradually decrease as you get used to the appliance.

Furthermore, thanks to advancements in modern orthodontic techniques combined with the expertise of a skilled doctor, discomforts like pain and inconvenience will be minimized.

Are tooth extractions necessary for braces?

Tooth extraction is not always required for braces. This decision depends on your oral condition and the doctor’s recommendation.

If there is enough space in the dental arch to move the teeth to the desired position, you do not need extractions. If necessary, the doctor will recommend extracting teeth that do not affect your health, such as premolars (tooth number 4) or wisdom teeth.

It’s best to visit a dental clinic for a detailed examination, so the doctor can create a suitable treatment plan.

Can I get braces at home?

Using over-the-counter or DIY braces kits following online guides is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Appliances that are not correctly sized for the dental arch make it very difficult to control the movement force, leading to more severe crowding and misalignment. Additionally, using tools of unknown origin and unverified materials can cause inflammation and damage the blood vessels around the teeth.

How are adult braces different from children's braces?

There are significant differences between braces for children and adults:

Treatment Time and Effectiveness: An adult’s jawbone is fully developed and denser than a child’s, making orthodontic treatment longer and more complex. Therefore, the treatment duration may be longer, and the cost may be higher.

Aesthetics: Due to frequent social interaction, adults often prefer clear aligners to maintain a natural appearance and feel more confident.

Tooth Extractions: In adults, extracting teeth to create space for movement is quite common, as all teeth have erupted and the jawbone is less flexible than in children.

How can I shorten the duration of my braces treatment?

To increase effectiveness and shorten the braces process, you should:

Adhere to your doctor’s appointments and follow instructions correctly.
Wear your orthodontic appliances, aligners, and elastic bands as prescribed.
Limit sugary foods, starches, and hard, chewy foods to avoid damaging the appliances.
Maintain proper oral hygiene: brush twice a day, use interdental brushes, floss, and mouthwash.
Avoid bad habits during braces: biting pens, thumb sucking, lip sucking, and tongue thrusting.

Do braces affect speech?

In the first few days after getting braces, you may feel some discomfort when speaking. However, after 3-5 days, once you are used to the appliance, you will be able to speak as clearly as before.

How does the diet change with braces?

Braces do not cause significant difficulties with eating. With clear aligners, you can completely remove them when eating, allowing you to maintain your comfortable eating habits.
